Effective Health Management
HEALTHSUM was started by Dr. John Wenz at Washington State University out of a constant feeling of frustration over the lack of “good” health records on dairy farms throughout the country. Dr. Wenz and Dr. Sarah Giebel embarked on a USDA funded research project titled “Good Health Records” which verified consistent, accurate health data could be recorded on farm in a timely manner. In other words; There is no excuse for bad records!
But why keep records at all? We have always heard we should do it, primarily to track treatments and prevent any drug residues from entering milk or meat. But many farms can accomplish this goal by writing on the cow, her ear tags, or a notebook. The reason farm records are poor (in many but not all herds) is they haven’t received any value out of the extra step of entering events into a computer program or for doing it “well”. HEALTHSUM was created to change this.
Dr. Wenz, with collaboration from Dr. Fred Muller and Dr. Gary McArthur, continued to develop the database originally developed at WSU into a commercially available product which creates value in health records. Now we can compile the data into a usable form of information. We can analyze this information (data) to actually know what’s working on our farms and allow us to make management decisions on farms based on solid information, rather than impressions.
In January of 2015, Drs. Wenz, Muller, and McArthur created the private business entity The HEALTHSUM Syndicate, LLC and purchased the license to the HEALTHSUM technology from WSU. This step allowed the partners to invest in the technology financially as well as intellectually to streamline processes in the system and develop additional programming to increase the efficiency, performance, and value of the HEALTHSUM system.
In 2016, we added Bryan Welly, MS and DVM candidate (UC Davis ’19) to the ownership team to assist with continued database and services development as well as business and personnel management. The HEALTHSUM Syndicate also employs a number of technicians which assist with regular data management, report generation, and client services.
